The school bully smiled, and everyone knew something was about to happen.
“Gavin Dawson,” the boy who’d been bumped suddenly said, “I’m fine, don’t get into a conflict with them. They’re just looking for an excuse to stir up trouble.”
Just a few days ago, there was the incident with Shawn Douglas. If Gavin Dawson got into another fight, it would be hard to explain things, especially to Megan Shaw.
The guy with the dark skin kept going: “That’s a bit unfair, don’t flatter yourselves too much, it’s just a game—”
“You, get off the court,” Gavin Dawson said coldly. “Let someone else play.”
“Bro, is that really necessary?”
Gavin Dawson didn’t reply.
The dark-skinned guy stared at him for a moment, scoffed, then turned and left the court.
With the small forward unable to play, both sides paused to make substitutions. Ian Scott saw they were short a player and volunteered, “Xiao Duan, how about I go in?”
Ian Scott was decent at basketball and had played small forward before, but his stamina wasn’t great and his reaction speed wasn’t particularly fast.
Gavin Dawson glanced over at the sports class. When the dark-skinned guy left, he also called off their worst point guard, replacing them with two other boys. It was exactly the same lineup as during the freshman basketball tournament.
Gavin Dawson didn’t really want Ian Scott to go up and get crushed, but if he didn’t call Ian Scott, he wasn’t sure who else to pick.
As he hesitated, someone walked up beside him and picked up the basketball that had fallen to the ground.
“I’ll take his place,” Logan Carter said.
There was a buzz of conversation from the crowd. Seeing him step onto the court, some girls who had started to leave after hearing the class bell even turned back.
A once-in-a-year spectacle.
The school heartthrob and the school bully were actually going to play basketball together.
When they saw Logan Carter join in, the other boys from Class Ten looked delighted, but then glanced at Gavin Dawson with a bit of concern. Everyone knew how skilled Logan Carter was, but no one was sure if Gavin Dawson would agree to play with him.
Under the expectant gazes of his teammates, Gavin Dawson suddenly said, “You know if we lose, we have to go dance in the square, right? In front of everyone. It’s super embarrassing.”
“I know,” Logan Carter tossed the ball into his arms, meaning for him to serve: “I don’t plan on dancing.”
Calm, yet cocky.
Gavin Dawson laughed, dribbling the ball on the ground. The sports class saw the new player on the opposing team open with some trash talk and reflexively wanted to fire back, but when they saw it was Logan Carter who’d spoken, they had to swallow their tempers.
Off the court, the dark-skinned guy called out boldly, “Brother Lu, you might be good, but your teammates might not be. This is a team game, after all.”
The sports class guys snickered in the back. Logan Carter glanced at him and said meaningfully, “My teammate just made you get off the court. What do you think of his skills?”
“……”
The game continued.
Even though both Gavin Dawson and Logan Carter were individually strong, they’d never played together before and had zero chemistry.
The other team was the complete opposite. Probably fired up by Gavin Dawson’s earlier actions, the sports class had subbed in all their school team players.
One of them was especially good at three-pointers, seemingly able to score from any angle. The score had been close, but in the last minute, that guy sank a three-pointer, widening the gap by a crucial point.
The situation from the first quarter seemed to be repeating itself, except this time, the odds of winning had completely flipped.
The sports class erupted in cheers. Just as everyone thought the outcome of this quarter was decided, Gavin Dawson intercepted the ball from the opposing point guard and sprinted toward the sports class’s basket.
Shawn Douglas was nearly laughing. He was standing inside Class Ten’s three-point line and didn’t even bother running back to his own basket.
With so little time left, Gavin Dawson was still flailing around—did he really think he could pull off a miracle?
Gavin Dawson weaved past several defenders. When the opposing center came over to block him, Gavin Dawson hesitated.
The center was a new sub, and blocking shots was a breeze for him. If Gavin Dawson tried to force his way through, he’d probably get blocked again.
Gavin Dawson was a bit anxious. At such a critical moment, his choice would directly decide the outcome. He glanced around—his other teammates were lagging behind, only Logan Carter had kept up with his pace.
Should he pass the ball to Logan Carter?
Should he trust him?
……
“Hey!”
At that shout, Gavin Dawson passed the ball to Logan Carter. There was someone blocking Logan Carter too, but he quickly ducked low, narrowly dodged the defender, and charged straight for the basket with a jump shot.
Because of his momentum, Logan Carter shot right out of bounds, but before he crossed the line, he launched the ball from behind at a tricky angle toward the hoop.
With everyone watching, the ball bounced off the rim and then suddenly rolled in.
An unbelievable shot from behind the backboard.
Absolute brilliance.
That shot was worth 2 points, instantly turning the game around. Someone shouted, “Time’s up!”
The crowd erupted. Even those who didn’t understand basketball knew that Logan Carter’s move just now was off the charts. The boys from Class Ten laughed and cheered, “Isn’t our Brother Lu amazing?”
Before the other boys could answer, a few girls nearby screamed first, “Amazing—! So amazing! Class president, you’re so handsome ahhhhhhh!!”
