Chapter 36

When Xia'er recognized the scalpel, it shot through the air, aimed directly at her. A closer look revealed a glimmer of silver connecting the blade to its handle.

It was an extraordinary being!

In that instant of realization, the shadow behind Xia'er dove into the ground, darting along the black stone path like a swimming dragon. It reached out and grasped the shadow cast by the flying knife.

As soon as it caught the shadow, the flying knife hesitated in mid-air for a moment. The next second, the shadow melded seamlessly into the shadow of the knife.

The shadow it landed on seemed to ignite with black flames, the flames following the nearly imperceptible thin shadow cast by the silver line, burning forward until it stopped twenty-four meters away.

Not enough distance!

Once Xia'er steadied herself, she wasted no time and sprinted toward the direction of the flames. As she ran, the black shadow flames continued to blaze ahead.

"Avenger?" A voice called out from the rooftop ahead. Almost immediately, a figure clad in a black robe and wearing a black and silver beaked mask leaped down, landing steadily not far in front of Xia'er.

Seeing that Xia'er showed no signs of stopping, the masked figure took a few steps back and shouted, "Hey! Wait! Misunderstanding! We're on the same side!"

The masked figure's words had no effect on Xia'er. She quickly closed the distance, getting within twenty-four meters of the masked figure. From the shadow beneath the figure's feet, a shadowy black hand emerged, gripping the masked figure's ankle.

Just as Xia'er was about to twist the masked figure's ankle, the figure raised a hand to lift the mask, exclaiming, "It's the Redemption Society! The Tribunal! We're on the same side!"

Beneath the silver mask was a tall girl with long silver hair, her face covered by a thick cloth mask, her blue eyes wide with panic.

Xia'er's shadow climbed up her ankle, wrapping around her waist with its legs, while its arms locked around her neck.

Any sudden move from her, and Xia'er would not hesitate to snap her neck.

If she hadn't mentioned "the Tribunal," she would already be dead.

"Redemption Society?" Xia'er maintained a safe distance of about eighteen meters and asked, "What are you doing here?"

"Huh?" The silver-haired girl was momentarily taken aback by Xia'er's question. After a long pause, she finally responded, "You're not from the Tribunal?"

"I'm not," Xia'er confirmed without denying the girl's assumption.

"Then you are..."

"Just a kind-hearted extraordinary passerby."

Even in the light rain, Xia'er could see beads of sweat forming on the girl's forehead.

The Redemption Society—was it an extraordinary organization?

After realizing she was facing an Avenger, the girl had ceased her attacks. Did she have some familiarity with the extraordinary beings of the Church of the Savior?

Moreover, the silver-haired girl had aimed her earlier attack at Xia'er's knee, not choosing a more lethal target.

"What’s your purpose here?" Xia'er pressed, not wanting to waste any more time, tightening her grip slightly.

"Investigating this dehydration incident," the silver-haired girl replied quickly, feeling the pressure on her waist, "It's part of the Reenactment Ritual. We've already reached an agreement with the Church of the Savior!"

Reenactment Ritual... an agreement with the Church of the Savior?

Xia'er frowned slightly and continued, "What kind of agreement?"

"A major district of the Church of the Savior has been hit by a large-scale, unexplained epidemic. They came to the Redemption Society for help, and the condition is..."

"The condition is all the gains after the matter is resolved, including all the bodies of those who died this time."

All... bodies?

Chapter 38: Yulisi's Sister (Part Two)

"Do you know Yulisi?" Xia'er inquired.

Xia'er wouldn't fully trust the word of a stranger, but there was one person whose words held more credibility in her mind—Yulisi.

"The High Priest Yulisi? I know her," the silver-haired girl said, momentarily stunned. After a while, she added, "Uh... the Bell Tower Church is currently under her temporary management."

"Do you know where she is?"

"Yes, she's not far from the Bell Tower district."

"Take me to see her."

"Sure."

Seeing that Xia'er had finally lowered her killing intent, the silver-haired girl let out a sigh of relief.

She had no idea how this 'Avenger' had suddenly appeared in the tightly secured Bell Tower district, but the fact that this 'Avenger' wanted to see Yulisi was a good thing for her.

The Tribunal of the Church of the Savior was notoriously rebellious, and she didn't want to get involved in their affairs; she just wanted to trace the source of the epidemic here.

Xia'er slightly loosened her grip on the shadow, allowing the silver-haired girl to lead the way, while Xia'er followed cautiously from behind.

After all, each simulation required ten fixed points, and she didn't want to die inexplicably without gathering any information.

There was also one thing she couldn't figure out: why, amidst such a significant incident in the Bell Tower district, was Yulisi, the temporary manager of the Bell Tower Church, not present? What was the reason?

The silver-haired girl seemed to offer little resistance; perhaps the "Art of Conversation" had worked a bit. She was merely leading the way.

Xia'er was well-acquainted with every street in the Bell Tower district and wasn't worried about being misled.

Soon, they arrived at a checkpoint leading out of the Bell Tower district. The girl approached the soldiers, exchanged a few words, displayed a badge on her chest, and then turned back to wave at Xia'er.

Thus, under her guidance, Xia'er successfully passed through the Bell Tower district. No one in the military seemed surprised, as they couldn't see the shadow lurking behind the silver-haired girl.

The outskirts of the Bell Tower district appeared to have been cleared for some distance, with military tents lining the way. It wasn't until they neared the next intersection that they began to encounter some foot traffic.

Xia'er noticed that the further she moved away from the Bell Tower district, the more the whispers and murmurs in her ears faded, until only a faint whisper remained.

She also saw a reporter wearing a cloth mask and holding a notepad approach the silver-haired girl, seemingly inquiring about something. But when the silver-haired girl replied with an "I don't know," the reporter jumped back in fright and hurriedly ran away.

Before long, the silver-haired girl stopped in front of a hotel. The front desk had no owner, only a sign that read "No Rooms Available Today" hanging on the door. She turned back to look at Xia'er, not far away.

"Right here, room 202," the silver-haired girl called out to Xia'er. "The Church of the Savior has taken over this hotel."

"Go up and tell her to come down," Xia'er replied. "Just say Du Wen is here."

"Du Wen is here... why does such a good-looking person have such an ugly name..." the silver-haired girl muttered as she entered the hotel.

Xia'er slowly retreated to a nearby alley, keeping an eye on the hotel entrance and the upper floors. As long as the silver-haired girl was inside, she wouldn't be able to escape the reach of the shadow.

After about a minute, Xia'er suddenly felt a sharp pain coursing through her body. The shadow was rapidly pulled back to her side, accompanied by a flash of white light.

A tall, white, ethereal figure was gripping the collar of Xia'er's shadow, silently gazing in her direction.

It emanated a faint, flowing light, with what appeared to be a pair of drooping, luminous wings floating behind it.

Then, the white figure waved at Xia'er and released the collar of the shadow.

The moment the grip was released, the pain throughout Xia'er's body vanished, and the shadow, startled, dove into the shadow behind her.

So this is Yulisi's shadow...

Xia'er knew that Yulisi's ability to levitate objects was likely similar to her own shadow, but this was the first time she had truly seen Yulisi's white figure. At this point, Xia'er was half convinced that the silver-haired girl hadn't lied; she was indeed Yulisi.

When Xia'er was led to room 202 by the white figure, it pushed open the door, revealing a scene inside.

Yulisi, dressed in a luxurious priest's robe, sat in the center of the room on a sofa, her mask resting on her forehead, revealing her tightly closed eyes and long silver hair.

The silver-haired girl from earlier was now sitting on the floor, hugging Yulisi's leg.

"Sis! It's her!" Upon seeing Xia'er at the door, the silver-haired girl pointed dramatically in her direction, then quickly ducked behind Yulisi.

So they are sisters? No wonder they both have silver hair.

But why are sisters not in the same organization?

Xia'er noticed a hint of confusion on Yulisi's face, and she knew it was time to prove her identity.
