Chapter 18

She actually felt a guilty conscience from his words, as if he had really hit the mark, making her so uneasy that she didn’t know where to put her hands and feet, her back unconsciously straightening.

After a moment, she stuffed the plush toy in his hand and said softly, “I didn’t know it was yours.”

Grace Sawyer lowered her head, a bit awkwardly taking a step back.

When she didn’t hear him respond, she pointed to the books in the trunk and explained seriously, “I came to help my brother move his dorm. I saw things in the car and just wanted to help him carry them up.”

She waited a few more seconds, but he still didn’t say anything.

Grace Sawyer hesitated, then added, “If I’d known that doll was yours, I wouldn’t have helped carry it.”

“……” Henry Bennett’s brows moved slightly. He straightened up and repeated in a questioning tone, “If you knew it was mine, you wouldn’t have helped?”

Grace Sawyer nodded immediately. “Absolutely wouldn’t.”

“Absolutely wouldn’t?” Henry Bennett’s voice was lazy, with a hint of reproach. “Kid, do you have a conscience?”

“……”

If she took it, he called her a thief; if she didn’t, he said she had no conscience.

This man was even more fickle than the weather.

Henry Bennett added, “Have you forgotten the big favor your brother did for you?”

As soon as he said that, most of the dissatisfaction in Grace Sawyer’s heart dissipated. She mumbled, “I remember.”

“Then shouldn’t you be a little nicer to your brother?”

Grace Sawyer glanced at him and fell silent.

Henry Bennett chuckled softly and didn’t tease her further. He handed the plush toy to her. “If you like it, keep it and play with it.”

Grace Sawyer’s right hand twitched. Suddenly, she remembered his earlier words, “set your sights on me,” and quickly withdrew her hand, not daring to take it.

“Don’t want it?” Henry Bennett pulled his hand back. “Then should I throw it away?”

Grace Sawyer paused, then finally took it.

Henry Bennett found it amusing. “If you want it, just take it. Why are you so awkward, kid?”

At that, Grace Sawyer was a little displeased. “You just called me a thief.”

“Your brother was just joking with you.” Henry Bennett took out the stack of books from the car, freeing up his other hand to close the trunk. “Let’s go, upstairs.”

Grace Sawyer followed him without saying a word.

Henry Bennett glanced at his phone, then asked, “Are you upset?”

Grace Sawyer still kept silent.

Henry Bennett: “How about I give you the doll to make it up to you, okay?”

Grace Sawyer said bluntly, “This doll is ugly.”

“Ugly?” Henry Bennett raised his eyebrows and glanced sideways at it. “It’s not that bad.”

“Why did you buy this?”

“I didn’t buy it.” Henry Bennett thought for a moment and said carelessly, “I forgot where it came from.”

Suddenly, Grace Sawyer seemed to understand something and asked, “Brother, was this given to you by someone else?”

Henry Bennett: “Hm? I think so.”

Grace Sawyer lost interest. “Then I’ll give it back to you.”

“Don’t like it?” Henry Bennett reached out to her. “Then give it here, I’ll take it.”

Grace Sawyer silently handed it back.

Henry Bennett asked, “Is your backpack heavy?”

Grace Sawyer: “It’s fine.”

Henry Bennett asked again, “We have to climb to the fifth floor in a bit. Can you make it?”

“Of course I can. I’m thirteen, not three.” Grace Sawyer frowned, clearly unhappy that he was treating her like a baby. “And if I couldn’t, would you carry me up?”

Henry Bennett looked her up and down, tugged at the corner of his lips. “It’s not impossible.”

Grace Sawyer: “Keep dreaming.”

Henry Bennett paused, then suddenly burst out laughing. “Keep dreaming?”

Grace Sawyer pursed her lips. “It’s true.”

“All right.” Henry Bennett admitted with a compromise, “I’m dreaming.”

The plush toy was placed on top of the books by him. It wasn’t small, and its shape was a bit twisted, making it especially conspicuous. Grace Sawyer glanced at it a few more times, then quickly lowered her eyes and looked away.

The staircase was fairly wide, but there were a lot of people going up and down.

Afraid she’d get squeezed, Henry Bennett walked in front, letting her follow behind him.

The two of them quietly walked up to the fifth floor.

Grace Sawyer wasn’t in great shape, and now she was panting, her cheeks a bit red, sweat beading on her forehead. After climbing the last step, she leaned against the wall, squatted down, and looked like she was refusing to move, saying, “No way, I need to rest for a bit.”

Henry Bennett looked at her for two seconds. “All right, I’ll come back to get you in an hour.”

“……”

Grace Sawyer immediately grabbed his right leg, acting spoiled. “I just need a short break, not a whole hour.”

Henry Bennett teased, “Kid, your stamina is really bad.”

Grace Sawyer retorted, “It’s your school that’s stingy, can’t even build an elevator.”

“It’s only six floors in total, why build an elevator?”

Grace Sawyer muttered, “Then you’re really unlucky, only six floors and you live on the fifth.”

“All right, get up.” Henry Bennett checked his phone again and said, “Your legs will go numb if you squat too long.”

He seemed to be in a bit of a hurry.

This time, Grace Sawyer obediently stood up.

The two of them walked down the corridor.

Grace Sawyer followed just behind his right side, looking around curiously.

Soon, they arrived at the door of room 525.
