These are hands accustomed to farm work.
This is eighteen-year-old Eric Bennett.
He skillfully lifted the carrying pole, the two buckets of clear water looking so heavy, swaying precariously on his shoulders. The water sloshed, splashing his mud-stained ankles and washing away some of the dirt to reveal patches of fair skin.
But even so, he still managed to steadily carry the water back home and pour it into the large water vat.
After several trips back and forth, he finally filled the person-tall water vat.
By this time, Eric Bennett was already starving.
At this hour, there would be no food left for him at home. He returned to his room, took out a small candy tin, opened it, and saw that the spare change inside was gone.
This wasn’t the first time this had happened. Eric Bennett’s expression didn’t change at all. He closed the tin and put it back.
He picked up the carrying pole and walked out the door.
He ate two bowls of plain rice at Grandma Brooks’s house next door, in exchange for filling a water vat for her.
After finishing these chores, Samuel Bennett and Abraham Lincoln returned home with a third person.
Eric Bennett’s younger brother Adam Bennett came in and immediately complained, “Mom, the amusement park was so much fun! Next time you have to take me again.”
Abraham Lincoln said, “Fun, my foot! Even instant noodles there cost 50 yuan a cup, and you insisted on eating them, wasting so much money!”
Adam Bennett pouted, “It tasted different from the regular kind. They must have used good ingredients, otherwise how could it be so expensive?”
Abraham Lincoln said, “What could be different? Stop making excuses.”
Adam Bennett fell silent. When he saw Eric Bennett, he called out, “Eric Bennett, did you do my homework for me?”
Eric Bennett was used to him calling him by name. Samuel Bennett and Abraham Lincoln always indulged him, so he never bothered to correct it. He replied calmly, “No, I didn’t.”
Adam Bennett jumped up, both angry and anxious. “It’s already afternoon and you still haven’t done it! If I can’t hand it in tomorrow, I’ll tell Dad not to give you any living expenses! See if you can survive then!”
Eric Bennett glanced at him. In fact, Samuel Bennett never gave him any living expenses anyway.
Samuel Bennett didn’t feel embarrassed at all. He scowled and said, “What have you been doing all day? Go do An’an’s homework now.”
Eric Bennett said, “Are you going to have me take the college entrance exam for him too?”
Samuel Bennett frowned and said, “Don’t talk back. Your brother is much smarter than you. He’s destined for great things. How can you compare to him? You should know your place.”
Adam Bennett added fuel to the fire, “I just don’t have time to do homework. I can get into the top ten in the whole school on any test, unlike someone else. Even though you’re in Nanyang, being ranked over 800 in the whole school is useless. You probably won’t even get into a junior college in the college entrance exam. I don’t think you need to keep studying.”
Abraham Lincoln agreed, “That’s right, there’s no need for you to keep studying. If you still care about this family, you should go out and work to help out. Your dad works so hard to support the three of us. It’s exhausting. Isn’t that Chen family boy two years younger than you? He’s working in Guangdong and sends back three or four thousand yuan every month.”
Eric Bennett said nothing.
Abraham Lincoln disliked his unresponsive attitude and pursed her lips, saying, “Hurry up and do An’an’s homework. We’re going out tonight, so you’ll have to take care of your own dinner.”
With that, she and Samuel Bennett went back to their room.
Adam Bennett grinned smugly at Eric Bennett, “This is my house. If you don’t behave, I have a hundred ways to make you suffer. You’d better be good, or I’ll tell Mom and Dad and you can just drop out of school.”
After saying this, Adam Bennett also went to his room.
Only Eric Bennett was left in the living room. He looked around. In this cramped two-bedroom apartment, there was no place for him.
His room was just a small space converted from the balcony.
Is this a home? Eric Bennett thought to himself. No, it’s not.
At the same time, Andrew Foster was barefoot, stepping onto a Persian carpet that cost tens of thousands of US dollars per meter, a strange expression on his obviously youthful face as he looked at his father, David Foster.
David Foster found his son an eyesore no matter how he looked at him. With guests present, he was embarrassed to kick him, so he forced himself to speak patiently: “Why aren’t you wearing shoes? No manners.”
Then he turned to the guest and said, “This kid’s been spoiled at home. I can’t control him anymore.”
The guest smiled and said, “Mr. Qin, you and your son have a great relationship.”
David Foster said, “Not at all. This kid is a handful. He gives me a headache.”
Andrew Foster stared at David Foster’s thick hair and couldn’t help but reach out and give it a tug.
David Foster snapped, “What are you doing now?”
Andrew Foster said, “Dad, so you hadn’t gone bald at this age after all.”
David Foster: “……”
David Foster said angrily, “Go do your homework! Get out of my sight!”
Andrew Foster ran off at lightning speed. David Foster coughed a few times and said, “This kid is a handful, always talking nonsense.”
The guest couldn’t help glancing a few more times at David Foster’s forehead, giving an awkward but polite smile.
Andrew Foster ran back to his room. Looking at the furnishings, he was certain—he really had been reborn, back to ten years ago!
Even if Andrew Foster was drunk, he would never black out, so he still remembered what he had said to Henry Clark.
