Chapter 9

Ethan Clark had been learning about all kinds of metaphysics, including gu insects, because he wanted Logan Clark to obtain a physical body.

Usually, when first refining a gu, you need to select several highly poisonous insects, such as venomous snakes or centipedes, and put them all into a sealed container, guiding them to fight each other inside.

The last surviving poisonous insect becomes the gu, with toxicity far beyond the ordinary.

The gu insects Ethan Clark had seen over the years, because of the convergence of several poisons, generally had bright colors on their bodies, like the red of a centipede’s legs or the green of a frog’s skin.

The more vibrant the color of a gu insect, the more poisonous it is.

The lady boss said her gu insect was originally colorful, so it must have been extremely toxic, but now it had become an ordinary black, its toxicity greatly weakened...

Something must have happened in between.

It seemed the lady boss didn’t know either.

Ethan Clark stared absentmindedly at the painless wound on his index finger. Depending on the refining method, gu insects have different effects. He felt this matter was definitely not as simple as just being bitten—there must be more to come.

Suddenly, the app vibrated and sent a message notification—

[Condition met. Congratulations, you have triggered the unique side quest of "The Red-Clad Wraith"—Infant Head Gu.]

Ethan Clark was stunned.

[Beginner Tip 1: Every horror movie must have a main quest, and may have one or more side quests. Side quests have trigger conditions. After triggering, completing the side quest requirements grants extra point rewards.]

[Beginner Tip 2: Side quest exploration also counts toward the actor’s personal plot exploration rate. The plot exploration rate is the most important metric for evaluating an actor’s overall performance after filming ends.]

[Side Quest—Infant Head Gu: If actor Ethan Clark uncovers the secret behind the decline of the Infant Head Gu, 50 points will be awarded.]

At this moment, the “audience” watching from outside the horror movie:

[Holy crap, this newbie triggered a side quest!!!]

[Just luck, right? What would a newbie know?]

[Isn’t this luck way too insane???]

[Tch, so what if it’s triggered? Side quests aren’t that easy to explore. You might not even survive the main quest.]

[I have a feeling that if this really gets explored, the quality of this movie will be upgraded. Heh, I spent 100 underworld coins to watch the worst-quality film, and now it might get upgraded. What a bargain.]

[He was really brave just now, letting a gu insect crawl on his hand! Would you dare? I’m rooting for him! So cool! Trash Caleb Turner]

[I’m following him now.]

[Do you think this side quest will drop an item?]

……

Inside the horror movie, Ethan Clark casually opened his personal info panel for a glance, and was surprised to find he now had 9 fans.

Ethan Clark put away his phone and went out, seeing Caleb Turner at the restroom door.

Caleb Turner stared at Ethan Clark, his gaze flickering slightly. He had just needed to pee and, upon entering, happened to catch Ethan Clark’s phone vibrating.

Caleb Turner thought the app had issued the next instruction, so he checked his own app, only to find the main quest was still stuck at “sign the contract.”

So at this moment, there was only one possibility for Ethan Clark’s phone to vibrate—Ethan Clark had triggered a side quest.

This clueless newbie had actually triggered a side quest!

Jealousy and greed flashed in Caleb Turner’s eyes. He hadn’t expected such a shoddily made film to even have a side quest.

Although side quests didn’t reward as many points as the main quest, the probability of dropping items was much higher.

Items dropped in horror movies could be taken and used in future films—their value was obvious.

These newbies didn’t understand, but they knew all too well.

Caleb Turner still didn’t have any items, which always made him feel inferior and afraid to try higher-level horror movies.

Side quests could be triggered by multiple people, as long as they all met the conditions.

Caleb Turner tried hard to recall everything that had happened since the horror movie began, but still couldn’t figure out at which point a side quest existed.

Could it have happened after he left the office?

Caleb Turner deeply regretted it.

It seemed impossible for him to trigger it now.

But side quests could be shared or even transferred to others, and he just happened to have that kind of interest in this newbie. As Caleb Turner thought of this, his gaze grew darker, and he simply reached out to block Ethan Clark.

“Something you need?” Ethan Clark frowned almost imperceptibly. His desire to perform well took the upper hand, so he didn’t immediately show his dislike or disregard for Caleb Turner.

Caleb Turner didn’t like beating around the bush either: “Are you coming with me or not?”

“Coming with you for what?”

Caleb Turner directly grabbed his hand.

Ethan Clark glanced at that hand and instantly understood, suddenly smiling gently: “What’s in it for me?”

Caleb Turner hadn’t expected him to be so cooperative, and was momentarily stunned, then smiled: “I’ll help you be the second male lead, meaning you’ll be rated second overall. You ‘come’ with me, and share with me the side quest you got.”

That word “come” was spoken with blatant ambiguity.

Caleb Turner felt this was a sure-win deal compared to buying Ethan Clark. He was just a newbie—maybe a bit smart, but inexperienced and frail. Wouldn’t he need someone to protect him to safely get through his first film?

He’d been through several horror movies and was a fitness coach—he was the obvious choice for Ethan Clark.

But when Ethan Clark heard the word “side quest,” his gaze turned completely cold.

When he looked up again, he seemed to be seriously weighing Caleb Turner’s offer.

Caleb Turner felt secretly pleased.
