Olivia Carter: "I'm not in the mood to eat today." She would have her dad bring her to eat another day.
Olivia Carter: Just thinking about her poor and unpromising brother made her lose her appetite for anything.
Of course, Olivia Carter thought the desserts looked beautiful, but her instinct told her they must be very expensive, not something Ethan Carter could afford.
In her eyes, her dad David Carter was the wealthiest person in the family. Not only did he have his own company and employees, but he also regularly gave living expenses to her great-uncle and others. Her mom Grace Bennett didn’t earn as much as her dad, but she was a teacher who educated and nurtured students, well-liked by many, and was also very impressive.
Grandma, great-uncle, and great-aunt were already elderly; they no longer needed to work for money. As her dad put it, they should be enjoying life now. From this perspective, her brother Ethan Carter was truly at the bottom of the food chain—he didn’t even have money for medical bills and had to wear torn pants.
Ethan Carter had no idea how badly his little sister thought of him. Seeing that Olivia Carter really wasn’t interested, he led her onward. The siblings hadn’t walked far before Ethan Carter was drawn to a certain luxury store and took Olivia Carter inside.
Although Ethan Carter kept his face well covered, his aura and attire couldn’t be hidden, and a sales associate immediately came over to offer one-on-one service. Ethan Carter had entered a men’s store. He’d been busy with work for so long and hadn’t gone shopping in ages, so now that he finally had a chance to spend money, he started to dawdle.
Olivia Carter was seated by a young male sales associate. She sat there bored, holding a bottle of mineral water, looking just like a reluctant boyfriend accompanying his girlfriend shopping, with nothing to do. She was still young and didn’t understand the concept of luxury goods; she just thought her brother was a bit vain, even discussing discounts with the staff.
The sales associate said there was a promotion: spend a thousand and get fifty back. Ethan Carter nodded in understanding, seeming to think it was a good deal. After all, each item cost at least ten thousand, so the discount wasn’t bad.
Olivia Carter couldn’t bear to expose her penny-pinching brother: Is it the fifty you’re short of? It’s the thousand in front that you’re missing!
Olivia Carter wasn’t the type to embarrass people in public, but she really couldn’t listen anymore, so she slipped away to look around elsewhere.
There were few customers in the store. As the little girl moved a few steps, the other saleswomen couldn’t help but keep their eyes on her. Fortunately, Olivia Carter didn’t look like she was going to cause trouble; she just curiously looked around, staying quiet the whole time.
One saleswoman wanted to guide Olivia Carter back, but seeing that the child was well-behaved, she didn’t want to scold her and could only follow along closely. Olivia Carter finally stopped near the neighboring counter, because a customer and a saleswoman seemed to be having a dispute. Their voices were getting louder, catching her attention.
The saleswoman following Olivia Carter quickly tried to lead the child away from the commotion, patiently saying, "Little one, let’s go back over there."
At the counter, a brown-haired, blue-eyed foreign man was arguing with a saleswoman, looking a bit impatient and muttering in a foreign language. The saleswoman, with her exquisite makeup, had a forced smile as she tried to communicate in English, struggling to explain. The atmosphere was getting more and more tense, and the man’s face even showed a hint of anger, as if he was about to storm out.
The saleswoman was sweating at her temples. In the end, she had no choice but to ask her supervisor for help: "Ma’am, could you please come take a look? I really don’t know how to explain anymore..."
The saleswomen’s English was quite good, but the customer didn’t seem to understand, and his expression only got worse. The foreign customer’s English wasn’t very good either, making communication even harder.
Olivia Carter listened for a while, then suddenly said, "Здравствуйте!"
The foreign man, who had been angry, was stunned to hear his native language. He turned to see a delicate little Chinese girl. The saleswoman had wanted to take Olivia Carter away, afraid she’d get caught up in trouble, but unexpectedly, the man and the little girl started chatting away, talking non-stop.
After understanding the situation, Olivia Carter translated: "The gentleman says he thinks there’s a problem with the discounted price."
The saleswoman looked helpless. "I already explained the promotion to this customer just now..."
Hearing the complicated discount calculation, Olivia Carter started chatting away with the man again. The man looked confused and hesitant, as if deep in thought.
Ethan Carter heard the commotion and turned to see the sales staff gathering around, thinking his sister had caused trouble. He frowned and said, "Olivia Carter, what are you doing?"
Olivia Carter had been sitting quietly just a moment ago, but now she was at the next counter, busy with something. Ethan Carter was sure she wasn’t a troublemaker at home—was she acting out in public instead?
At the counter, Olivia Carter and the foreign man were sitting on high stools, working out calculations on paper. Hearing her brother’s question, Olivia Carter calmly replied, "I’m teaching our foreign friend math."
Ethan Carter: "???"
The saleswoman continued to give Olivia Carter numbers to translate for the foreign man. Olivia Carter simply wrote out the numbers as equations, demonstrating each step for the man. The man watched the calculation process, pondered for a few seconds, seemed to realize where he’d misunderstood, nodded thoughtfully, and happily took out his credit card.
The foreign man, satisfied, swiped his card and made his purchase, then chatted away to Olivia Carter, looking much more relaxed.
