As a well-known high-end residential complex, Yurongtai is beautiful and tranquil, with an excellent environment—a true oasis of peace in the bustling city. Grace Bennett's home is on the first floor, complete with a spacious private yard, which is tastefully maintained.
“Mr. Bennett, happy Spring Festival!”
As soon as Emma Harris entered the house, she was warmly welcomed by Mr. Bennett. Grace Bennett glanced at Emma Harris, who was carrying bags and packages, and looked at her reproachfully, saying helplessly, “You didn’t have to bring so many things.”
Emma Harris grinned and said, “I freeloaded so many meals at your place during my senior year of high school, I have to make it up to you now.”
Grace Bennett couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. She helped her student put down the things and invited her to sit.
Inside, there were two elderly people, a man and a woman, preparing vegetables. When they saw Emma Harris arrive, they greeted her a bit awkwardly. Grace Bennett introduced, “These are Olivia Bennett’s grand-uncle and grand-aunt. They’re here to celebrate New Year’s Eve with us.”
Emma Harris quickly said, “Happy New Year to you both!”
“Hello, hello.” The two elders seemed a bit embarrassed and retreated to the kitchen with their bowls of vegetables, leaving the living room to Grace Bennett and Emma Harris.
Not long after, David Carter came out of the kitchen, wearing an apron. His face was glowing, his voice loud and cheerful as he greeted Emma Harris, then immediately darted back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
“Mr. Bennett, you’re amazing—Mr. Carter is the one cooking at home?” Emma Harris teased. “The big boss does housework too?”
Emma Harris’s high school was one of the top three in the city, and most of the female teachers there had married well. Back then, an English teacher once got so frustrated with the underachievers in class that she blurted out she wouldn’t be here if not for her teaching ideals. Grace Bennett was always low-key at school, but her close students all knew she came from a well-off family.
Grace Bennett smiled and said, “What big boss? He’s just staying home now to take care of Olivia Bennett.”
Emma Harris: “Now that Mr. Carter has both a son and a daughter, he doesn’t need to keep striving. He’s happier than most big bosses!”
Grace Bennett made tea for Emma Harris and brought out some snacks. After a bit of small talk and reminiscing about the past, they finally got to the main topic. Emma Harris is now an expert in education, having specialized for a time in the psychology and education of gifted children. Upon hearing this, Grace Bennett reached out to her former student for advice.
Grace Bennett looked troubled. “After I had Olivia Bennett a few years ago, I went back to teaching. She’s always been at home playing around with her dad, so I didn’t notice anything unusual…”
Emma Harris laughed, “Listen to yourself! If just playing around with Mr. Carter can produce a prodigy, isn’t that a good thing?”
Grace Bennett sighed softly and lowered her voice. “Honestly, I’d rather she were just an ordinary child. You don’t know how strict her dad used to be with Ethan Bennett. If Olivia Bennett really has this kind of potential, he’ll push her to the limit, just like he did with Ethan Bennett back then.”
Emma Harris looked thoughtful. She had heard a bit about the The Carter Family family. It was said that Ethan Carter once wanted to be a singer, which caused a huge rift with his father, David Carter, who never got over Ethan Carter giving up his studies. Even though Ethan Carter is now successful and famous, it doesn’t mean the old wounds have healed.
Emma Harris comforted her, “Don’t worry. Prodigies aren’t as mysterious as people think. Research on gifted children is getting more advanced both at home and abroad. If Olivia Bennett’s intellectual development is truly far ahead of her peers, or if she has some special talent, then learning more is good for her—holding her back would only waste her potential…”
“Have you heard of the Youth Class at No. 8 Middle School? They specifically recruit gifted children of the right age and provide them with a suitable learning environment. If you put a gifted child in a regular class, it might actually make them dislike school, because their learning ability is so much higher than their peers—they’ll feel ‘hungry’ in class and think school is boring.”
Grace Bennett nodded with a smile. “That’s why I asked you to come—you’re the expert in this field.”
Emma Harris: “Let me meet Olivia Bennett first. I even brought some test questions…”
Before Emma Harris could finish, she suddenly saw a little head peeking out from behind a wall not far away and was momentarily taken aback. The little girl was adorable, with bright eyes. She looked quite young, hiding behind the wall and peeking out curiously, reminding one of the ‘secretly observing’ meme.
Following Emma Harris’s gaze, Grace Bennett immediately spotted Olivia Carter behind the wall and called out, “Olivia Bennett, what are you doing hiding there?”
Olivia Carter had straight bangs, her hair neatly tied back, and her face as soft as a rice dumpling. In a gentle voice, she said, “Mom, I want to go play with Sarah Young jie-jie.”
“We’re about to eat. Come say hi to Emma Harris jie-jie first, then you can go out later.”
Olivia Carter sized up Emma Harris, as if observing something, her eyes blinking. Emma Harris, finding her so cute and well-behaved, took the initiative and said with a smile, “Hello, Olivia Bennett, I’m Emma Harris, I used to be your mom’s student.”
Olivia Carter’s eyes were as clear as gemstones. She studied Emma Harris for a long time, making Emma Harris feel a bit bewildered.
Emma Harris couldn’t shake the feeling that the little girl in front of her could see right through her, and she waited in a daze for Olivia Carter’s response.
