Chapter 5

David Carter was delighted when he saw his mother speak and said, “Olivia Bennett, Grandma is calling you!”

The old lady is now over ninety years old. Due to her hearing loss, she has gradually lost her ability to speak and rarely opens her mouth. These days, she can’t even recognize her own son David Carter, let alone call out anyone else’s name.

Olivia Carter had just been playfully teasing Grandma, but now she silently lowered her head and busied herself with the food in her bowl.

David Carter could be called a model filial son. He’s usually tolerant of his daughter’s little faults, but he can’t accept her ignoring her elders. He quietly reminded her, “Olivia Bennett, Grandma is talking to you, you should respond to her.”

Olivia Carter buried her head in her bowl and mumbled something unintelligible.

David Carter didn’t catch it and frowned slightly. “What did you say?”

Olivia Carter put down her bowl and raised her voice: “I said Grandma wasn’t talking to me.”

“What?”

“I don’t know who she’s calling, but it’s definitely not me!” Olivia Carter may be small, but she has a big temper. She quickly finished her food in a few bites, slammed her bowl down in frustration, and dashed back to her room.

Olivia Carter used to think Grandma was calling her, but she gradually noticed something was off. In fact, Grandma couldn’t remember her. Grandma was becoming increasingly confused, unable to keep track of the people and things in front of her, only remembering things from the past. Grandma’s sense of time was different from everyone else’s—while normal people live in the present, Grandma lives in the past.

Olivia Carter didn’t know who Grandma was calling, but she was sure it wasn’t her. She tried hard to make Grandma remember her, but was repeatedly frustrated and upset.

“Xiao—” Grandma was still sitting at the table, struggling to catch her breath as she spoke.

No one expected the little girl’s sudden outburst. Emma Harris listened carefully for a moment and said uncertainly, “Teacher Xiao, it sounds like the old lady is calling Ethan Bennett?”

The old lady had a bit of a hometown accent, and her Mandarin wasn’t very clear. Plus, speaking was difficult for her, so she often couldn’t pronounce the “逸” sound clearly, which made people mistake it for “Olivia Bennett.”

“It really does sound like that?” David Carter was suddenly enlightened. “Mom did spend a lot of time with Ethan Bennett, so she probably mistook Olivia Bennett for him. And Olivia Bennett, really, Ethan Bennett isn’t even home, and she’s still getting upset…”

Grace Bennett sensed something was off and asked, “Did you ever tell Olivia Bennett about her brother?”

After her maternity checkup, Grace Bennett returned to school and took over the senior class, leaving her extremely tense and with little time for family matters. David Carter always swore he’d handle everything to make up for Grace Bennett’s past efforts at home, and since Ethan Carter was also a workaholic, she didn’t ask much about the father and son.

However, Olivia Carter’s words just now revealed something odd, making Grace Bennett feel like she’d missed some details.

David Carter: “Of course, with so many products endorsed by Ethan Bennett around the house, how could she not know?”

Grace Bennett: “???” What does that have to do with endorsed products?

Grace Bennett was shocked. “Did you ever actually tell Olivia Bennett that she has a biological older brother?”

David Carter was intimidated by his wife’s serious expression. His gaze wandered and his tone weakened. “Let me think, let me think, I’m suddenly not so sure…”

Grace Bennett: “Didn’t they ever talk on the phone!?”

David Carter: “Ethan Bennett hasn’t had time to call in recent years…”

Grace Bennett pressed her lips together, barely containing her anger so as not to yell at her husband in front of guests, deciding to deal with David Carter after dinner. She vaguely remembered mentioning Ethan Carter to her daughter, but at that time Olivia Carter was still a baby, so whether she remembered or not was questionable.

Emma Harris sensed the tense atmosphere at the table and immediately shrank her head like a quail, focusing on her food. After dinner, Emma Harris had Olivia Carter finish her exercises, then took the completed work and said her goodbyes, planning to review the results at home.

Grace Bennett still had things on her mind and smiled helplessly. “We must have made a fool of ourselves in front of you.”

Emma Harris comforted her, “Not at all! Kids don’t really remember people they’ve never met. Ethan Bennett has just been busy with work these past few years. Once the siblings meet, it’ll be fine!”

Grace Bennett forced a smile. What she feared most now was that the siblings wouldn’t recognize each other, making their meeting extremely awkward. David Carter was definitely the culprit behind this whole mix-up, and just thinking about it made her angry.

After Emma Harris left, David Carter immediately sensed a storm brewing. Unfortunately, little uncle and little aunt had already made their escape, staying far away from the coming trouble. Little uncle William Carter went to the kitchen to wash dishes, while little aunt Charles Scott helped Grandma Emily Carter back to her room.

Grace Bennett looked at her husband with a chilly gaze. Facing her silent pressure, David Carter hurriedly called his youngest daughter out as a witness. “I think Olivia Bennett should know!”

Olivia Carter was called out from her room. She had been watching "Peppa Pig" on her iPad, but when she looked up, she noticed her mother’s emotional state.

Grace Bennett’s red heart was pounding violently, while David Carter’s red heart shrank timidly. Olivia Carter, through observation and deduction, had discovered that the color of a heart represented someone’s attitude toward her, while the shape and movement of the heart represented their current emotional state.

Olivia Carter: Mom is angry, Dad is scared, but it doesn’t seem to affect me.

After sensing the atmosphere, Olivia Carter felt reassured and continued watching her cartoon.

David Carter was eager to save himself. He took out the laundry detergent endorsed by Ethan Carter, pointed at the picture on it, and earnestly asked, “Olivia Bennett, do you know who this is?”
