She dragged a large bag, stepping into the garbage heap, careful not to let herself sink in. People often accidentally fell in here—just a few days ago, while rummaging through the trash, someone had fallen in and ended up suffocating to death.
Most of the recyclable metals on the market had already been picked clean by adults. Brian Walker squatted atop the mountain of trash, slowly sifting through it, tossing anything interesting into her bag, and soon forgot about her hunger.
Guarding one spot, Brian Walker found a broken test tube with a drop of pink liquid at the bottom. She picked it up and sniffed it, her eyes lighting up—it was nutrient solution!
She immediately raised it and tried to pour it into her mouth. After a long wait, that single drop of nutrient solution finally slid down the wall of the test tube.
Brian Walker savored it for a moment—it was strawberry-flavored nutrient solution.
That groggy feeling from prolonged hunger dissipated a little.
Nutrient solution was a good thing, easy to fill the stomach, but unfortunately, there was only a single drop.
If only she could find half a tube of nutrient solution, she wouldn’t have to go hungry all day.
Just as she thought this, a strong beam of light suddenly shone down from above. Brian Walker looked up—it was a garbage hovercar.
Strange, garbage hovercars usually came at two in the morning, but it was already past four. Why would a garbage hovercar still be coming?
Before Brian Walker could think further, another garbage hovercar appeared above the dump. She immediately dragged her bag and ran downhill. These garbage hovercars never cared if there were people below—they just dumped everything out, and every year, some people were crushed to death.
Once Brian Walker hid at the edge of the dump, she could see clearly: there were five garbage hovercars circling above, and next to them was a small flying craft.
The front window of the small flying craft kept flashing with white light. The frequency reminded Brian Walker of the cameras used by the media in her own world.
The next second, the five garbage hovercars opened their bottom panels, and countless large boxes fell into the dump. The small flying craft’s light flashed even more rapidly.
After dumping everything, the garbage hovercars and the small flying craft left together.
Brian Walker waited a while, then quickly climbed up, wanting to see what those boxes were.
She didn’t even need to look—she could already smell it. It was the scent of nutrient solution!
The boxes that had just fallen from the garbage hovercars had already been smashed open on the bottom layer, and the smell of nutrient solution began to waft out, mixing with the stench of the dump to form a strangely fragrant yet foul odor.
Brian Walker pulled out a homemade flashlight from her pocket, shone it on the boxes, and tore off the seal. She couldn’t help but gasp—all brand-new nutrient solution.
She opened several boxes in a row, and they were all filled with nutrient solution.
This situation was very much like the destruction of problematic food products.
Not knowing what was wrong with these nutrient solutions, Brian Walker still immediately hugged the intact boxes and stuffed them into her large bag—she managed to fit three big boxes. Then she dragged the bag to find her battered tricycle, stacked the three boxes of nutrient solution onto it, pushed the tricycle into the bushes to hide it, and then ran back to the dump. She repeated the process, carrying more nutrient solution to the tricycle. By her third trip, other scavengers had started to arrive, rushing to grab the nutrient solution.
The first thing those people did was break open the tube and pour the nutrient solution into their mouths.
“It really is nutrient solution! Tastes great!”
“Hurry, grab it!”
Brian Walker kept moving boxes of nutrient solution. When she was so hungry she felt dizzy, she took two tubes and poured them into her mouth. Instantly, her stomach felt warm, and the gnawing pain of hunger slowly faded.
She didn’t drink any more, and kept working until the tricycle could hold no more. Only then did she push the tricycle out, ready to head back.
It was quite a lot.
Brian Walker gritted her teeth and pedaled the tricycle all the way home, creaking as she went. She needed to find a chance to turn the tricycle electric, but she’d never found the parts she needed in the dump. The energy in this world was very different from that in her own, but unfortunately, all the children had were memories of endlessly scavenging the dump alongside the elderly.
Back at the abandoned, dilapidated building where no one lived, Brian Walker slowly carried the nutrient solution inside—a total of twelve boxes, which she stacked neatly against the wall, feeling satisfied.
Finally, she wouldn’t have to go hungry anymore.
This past month, she’d been so hungry that even her thinking had slowed down a lot. Every day, her mind was filled with thoughts of food.
Brian Walker suffered much more than the original child. The child had never seen good things since birth, but she was different—her previous world had endless delicacies. When a person is hungry, their mind is filled with all kinds of food, making them even hungrier. When she first went scavenging for food, she had to mentally prepare herself countless times.
After sitting on the ground to rest for a while, Brian Walker decided to go back to the dump for more nutrient solution.
Five truckloads of nutrient solution was no small amount. Even with all the scavengers in the dump, there was still plenty left, so today, the dump was especially harmonious—everyone was busy moving nutrient solution.
Brian Walker made four more trips, ignoring the harsh sun, working from dawn until dark, and brought back a total of forty-eight boxes. Her pockets were also stuffed with loose tubes of nutrient solution.
That night, she even treated herself to an extra meal, drinking one fruit-flavored and one vegetable-flavored nutrient solution. The hunger that had haunted her for a month finally disappeared. She fixed the leg of her alarm clock, then lay down to rest.
She slept straight through to four o’clock the next day. The alarm clock rang as usual, and Brian Walker got up, feeling much better. She prepared to head to the dump again, but this time, her goal wasn’t just nutrient solution—it was the garbage dumped at two in the morning.
