Chapter 6 006

Nathaniel Grant left right after speaking, leaving Ethan Carter standing there alone, shocked and suspicious.

He stared blankly in the direction Nathaniel Grant had gone. The other’s back was straight, shoulders sharp and cold—he really didn’t look like someone who would say something like “discuss it with your brother.”

Ethan Carter almost wondered if he’d misheard.

A gust of cold wind blew by, making his nose tip icy. Ethan Carter covered his face and sneezed, squeezed his frozen fingers, and finally turned to head upstairs.

It was just too cold.

Back in the dorm, as he took off his coat, Ethan Carter realized he’d forgotten to return the scarf.

He took off the scarf and held it in his hands, gazing at the soft fabric, a little lost in thought.

Ethan Carter thought, Mr. Lu is really dedicated.

He said he’d pretend to be a couple and really put aside his pride, never once acting superior, handling every detail perfectly.

No wonder he became a chairman at such a young age—he’s perfect at everything he does.

Ethan Carter couldn’t help but reflect on himself. In comparison, his own performance was much worse, and he’d even used honorifics a few times.

Next time, he had to correct himself and try not to hold the other back.

He wondered if his behavior tonight had delayed the other’s plans... Thinking this, Ethan Carter put the scarf away and glanced at his phone.

There were a ton of message notifications from Ivy Harris. On the ride back, Ethan Carter had ignored his phone because of his chapped lips, and since then, Ivy Harris had sent even more messages, repeatedly asking about how his night went.

Ethan Carter replied with a “not bad,” and was just about to lock his phone when a new friend request popped up on WeChat.

He tapped it and saw an extremely eye-catching nickname.

—“Brother.”

“……”

Ethan Carter’s finger froze for a moment. Realizing it was just an automatic contact suggestion, he finally let out a breath.

He thought about it, but in the end, didn’t send a friend request.

Even though they were supposed to act close, that was probably just for appearances in front of others, right? Online chatting wasn’t something others would see, and sending a request out of the blue might be overstepping.

Thinking this over, Ethan Carter couldn’t help but rub his temples.

Even if he didn’t show it, he was feeling a bit tired inside.

There were just too many things to consider—every word had to be carefully chosen, every action weighed for right or wrong.

Ethan Carter was never good at emotional stuff to begin with, and after such a busy day, he really was exhausted.

Ethan Carter straddled his chair, zoning out in a daze.

Looking back on the day, it had been pretty full—woken up early by a phone call, taking leave to go out and meet someone...

Wait, taking leave?!

Ethan Carter snapped back to reality in shock.

He still hadn’t caught up on the class notes he missed when he took leave earlier!

He hurriedly messaged his roommates who hadn’t returned yet, asking to borrow their notes and catch up on what he’d missed, throwing himself back into the heavy workload.

Medical students rarely have the luxury of slacking off. Once he got busy, the events of tonight were quickly pushed aside.

——

Even though this major life event of marriage had suddenly appeared, Ethan Carter’s daily life hadn’t actually changed much.

Ivy Harris still sent lots of messages as usual—about the wedding, about Nathaniel Grant. Ethan Carter’s studies were already non-stop, but Nathaniel Grant was actually even busier than he was.

Just from the snippets in reports or public documents, Ethan Carter could see how hard the other was working.

Since that dinner, they hadn’t been in touch. Thinking about it, that date must have been something Nathaniel Grant squeezed into his schedule. The WeChat new friend notification popped up again, but Ethan Carter dismissed it—he didn’t want to bother Mr. Lu at a time like this.

He figured as long as he cooperated when needed, that was enough.

Right now, midterms were actually what was taking up most of Ethan Carter’s energy. Plus, the engagement date hadn’t been set yet, and it might even clash with exams, so he had to make the most of his study time.

Even though he was already a senior, the fourth year of a five-year clinical medicine program wasn’t much different from the first three. Medical students were always busy, especially during exams, with a dozen or so subjects piling up—the schedule was really tight.

With so much to review, whenever there were no classes, Ethan Carter would basically go to the library with his roommates.

At noon, the four of them would go to the cafeteria together for lunch.

To avoid the lunch rush, they came a bit early and managed to snag an empty table.

The second roommate, Blake Cooper, was editing a post while eating.

As soon as he posted it, he put his phone on the table, and it immediately started vibrating like crazy, even spinning half a circle in place.

Liam Bennett was unfazed: “Flaked again?”
