Chapter 18

Samuel Clark stared at the pale blue vein on the back of his neck, reached out, and very carefully hooked it down, but her fingertip accidentally brushed against his skin, and she quickly withdrew her hand.

  He probably didn’t notice.

It was a light touch, like a feather. Jason Harris gripped the motorcycle handlebars, staring straight ahead, and blinked.

At the moment they went downhill, Samuel Clark was surprised to find that the streetlights on both sides of the road lit up one after another as if they were motion-activated, the light flickering like a galaxy suddenly illuminated in the universe.

The galaxy was beautiful, and she and the boy she secretly liked were at the center of the universe.

Suddenly, because of a sharp turn, Samuel Clark was thrown by inertia and bumped into his back, her whole body pressed against him. This time, it was Jason Harris, riding the motorcycle, whose body stiffened. He felt Samuel Clark’s soft cheek against his back, and the gentle curve of the girl’s chest, still perfectly round.

Jason Harris’s throat suddenly felt itchy.

Samuel Clark immediately sat up straight and said in a panic, “Sorry.”

Jason Harris didn’t answer right away. He pressed his tongue against his lower jaw and gave a lazy smile. “You really are obedient, Samuel Clark. I’m the one taking advantage of you, so why are you apologizing?”

“Then should you apologize to me?”

Jason Harris gave a little laugh, didn’t answer, and kept driving forward.

When they reached the school gate, Samuel Clark got off, took off her helmet, and handed it back to him, looking at him. “Thank you.”

Jason Harris was still sitting on the motorcycle, pulled out his phone, and checked his messages. They were all from Aunt Sheng, asking about Samuel Clark. As if remembering something, he lifted his eyelids. “By the way, if you have classes on weekends, you can ask me. If I’m free to go back, I’ll give you a ride.”

“Okay,” Samuel Clark’s eyes lit up. She asked, “Which class are you in at the flight academy? I’ll come find you then…”

Jason Harris unlocked his phone and handed it over casually. “To save trouble, just add me on WeChat.”

On the way back to the dorm, Samuel Clark felt like she was dreaming—she had actually added Jason Harris on WeChat. Back in high school, there was a class QQ group, and everyone added each other in batches. She had managed to add Jason Harris too, but they had never spoken.

He rarely posted updates, but Samuel Clark always checked them. Later, in senior year, when WeChat became popular, Jason Harris stopped using QQ except for gaming. Samuel Clark completely lost track of him after that.

Samuel Clark walked into the dormitory building, her mood soaring. Suddenly, an orange cat darted out of the bushes, meowing at her. Samuel Clark knew it was hungry again, so she ran to the convenience store to buy sausage and milk.

The kitten lay in Samuel Clark’s palm, eating the sausage. When it finished, it looked up at her with amber eyes and licked her palm. She smiled, eyes crinkling, and took out her phone to snap a picture of its little paw.

After returning to the dorm, Samuel Clark quickly showered, brushed her teeth, and climbed into bed with her phone. Lying on her bed, she logged into WeChat, and Jason Harris appeared in her contacts list.

Jason Harris’s profile picture was his German Shepherd. She clicked into his Moments and saw that he had posted very little, and the few posts were all landscape photos.

The screen reflected a conflicted face. Samuel Clark changed his remark name to Jason Harris, but frowned, feeling it was too obvious and worried someone might see it. In the end, she changed it to: zjz.

Z J Z—this way, no one would know. It was her own little secret.

Samuel Clark kept staring at the chat window with Jason Harris. At the top was a system message.

“He is now your friend. Start chatting!”

“He is now your friend. Start chatting!”

Samuel Clark’s heart was beating wildly, afraid a message would pop up on the screen at any moment. She typed “Good night” in the chat box, deleted it, retyped “I’ve arrived, thank you for tonight,” but then remembered Jason Harris hadn’t said she needed to message him, so she deleted it again.

In the end, Samuel Clark posted a Moment, with a picture of the cat’s little paw she took downstairs, and the caption: Hi~

After posting, Samuel Clark exited WeChat, checked her schedule for the next day, and saw messages in the class group. She clicked in, and noticed a red notification in Moments.

She opened it, held her breath, eyes widening in disbelief.

Five minutes ago, Jason Harris had liked her post.

Chapter 8 Confession 【Revised】

Mid-November, after a rain one day, the weather suddenly turned cold. As it got colder, Samuel Clark started wearing thicker clothes. She was preparing for a medical skills competition recently, so she carried a thermos every day, with seven or eight books tucked under her arm, heading straight to the library after every class.

On Tuesday, as usual, Samuel Clark was studying in the library. There were two days left before the exam, and she planned to thoroughly review everything and repeatedly memorize the key points.

The library was silent, rows of people sitting upright, each busy with their own work. At 10:30, Samuel Clark sat at her desk and glanced at the sky outside. Dark clouds were pressing down, as if it was about to rain.

She had forgotten to bring an umbrella when she left in the morning. Sophie Hill messaged her to remind her it was going to rain and to head back to the dorm early. Samuel Clark opened her notebook, planning to quickly go over the key points and then leave.

Suddenly, a boy walked over from the other side, breathing lightly. He took out a thermos, unscrewed it to take a sip, set it on the table, then pulled out a book and sat down to review.
