Chapter 9

“This is actually the first time I’ve seen Jason Harris today. I heard he changes girlfriends really fast—the shortest is less than a month, the longest no more than three months. Guess how long Evelyn Baker will last by his side this time?” Grace Lee poked at the green beans on her plate, asking with a face full of gossip.

“How do you know his name is Jason Harris?” Samuel Clark didn’t want to guess the shelf life of his girlfriends, so she casually asked another question.

“Of course I know! Didn’t I say I wanted to find a pilot boyfriend? I snuck into Beihang’s forum ages ago. I’ve got the scoop on all the famous hotties at their school. Plus, with Evelyn Baker’s high-profile personality, who in our class doesn’t know she’s dating a big shot?” Grace Lee tapped her chopsticks on the table like a storyteller. “Want to hear all the juicy details?”

Samuel Clark smiled but didn’t respond.

“Jason Harris, total heartthrob, 185 cm tall, freshman in flight technology at Beihang University. Do you know what’s really impressive about him?” Grace Lee threw out the question, wanting to interact with her audience.

Samuel Clark cooperatively shook her head, and Grace Lee continued, “Apparently, his mother is a famous cellist, and his father is in business. I heard that in high school, he was actually an art student, studying cello, and planned to go to Austria to specialize in music after the college entrance exam. But guess what happened?”

“The heartthrob rebelled and suddenly changed his mind, choosing to stay in China to study aviation. He even applied as a regular academic student and got into Beihang with excellent scores.” Grace Lee said.

“His grandfather was an engineer in national aircraft manufacturing, though he’s been retired for years now, and his grandmother is a music professor at a university. With a background like that, it feels like he’d be good at anything,” Grace Lee sighed as she spoke. “I really envy people like that—good at everything, always so at ease.”

“You’re excellent too, except for having a bit less hair.” Samuel Clark comforted her.

Grace Lee burst out laughing. She hadn’t expected Samuel Clark, who seemed so well-behaved, to have such a dry sense of humor. Grace Lee suddenly remembered another piece of gossip and whispered, “I saw on the forum that before the college entrance exam, Jason Harris even went to get his tattoo removed just to pass the physical. I think it’s a bit exaggerated, probably just hype.”

“No, it’s true.” Samuel Clark suddenly spoke up, her tone firm.

Grace Lee was stunned for two seconds, then winked at her, “How do you know it’s true? Don’t tell me you’ve been secretly following him. Do you like him?”

Caught off guard by someone unintentionally exposing her girlish feelings, Samuel Clark was drinking water and choked, coughing violently, her face turning bright red. Grace Lee immediately reached out to pat her back.

Samuel Clark and Jason Harris were both from Tianzhong and classmates. She really hadn’t meant to hide it, but explaining would be a hassle.

Besides, there was no point in saying anything.

Jason Harris probably didn’t remember her anymore.

Samuel Clark glanced at the two people not far away. Evelyn Baker was eating, and Jason Harris was clearly there to keep her company. He hadn’t even eaten, just came over to be with her, leaning lazily against the chair, head down playing games on his phone.

His other hand rested on the table, the pale blue veins on the back of his hand clearly visible, long and clean.

“I guessed. Look, there’s a white mark on the back of his hand—it’s obviously from getting a tattoo removed.” Samuel Clark quickly improvised.

Grace Lee turned to look, and sure enough, there was a conspicuous white mark on the back of Jason Harris’s hand, looking like a tattoo had just been removed.

“Detail master.” Grace Lee gave Samuel Clark a thumbs up.

After eating, Samuel Clark returned to the dorm and brought back a serving of shrimp and scrambled eggs for Sophie Hill. Sophie Hill immediately hugged her and cried, “Thank you, my dear Suisui!”

Samuel Clark patted her on the shoulder. When she walked to her desk to get a book, she hesitated a little. Because she’d run into him and another girl being flirty on the rooftop a week ago, she hadn’t gone up there for days.

But deep down, she was still afraid of seeing that scene, so Samuel Clark finally chose to go to the library.

That night, after doing a few sets of exercises and memorizing some medical knowledge, Samuel Clark returned to the dorm from the library. Sophie Hill was sitting on her bed painting her toenails—a grape purple color with sparkly glitter on top.

“Suisui, want me to paint yours?” Sophie Hill waved the nail polish at her.

“I’d better not,” Samuel Clark sat down and poured herself a glass of water, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to resist picking at it.”

“Hahahahahahahaha.” Sophie Hill couldn’t help but laugh. What a weird little quirk.

Samuel Clark looked innocent. She had OCD—if she painted her nails, she really wouldn’t be able to resist picking it off. Last New Year, her little cousin dragged her to get her nails done, and by the next day, Samuel Clark had picked them off until they looked like a bald old man’s head.

“By the way, Suisui, are you free tomorrow? It’s Saturday.” Sophie Hill closed the bottle and asked, “Can you go to Beihang with me? I have something at my uncle’s place and need to go over there.”

“Yeah, I’ll go with you.”

On the weekend, Sophie Hill slept until noon. The two of them tidied up and headed out together. As they passed the cafeteria, Samuel Clark was about to go in, but Sophie Hill stopped her and winked, “Don’t bother, someone’s treating us to a meal.”
