Evan Carter didn’t have the habit of eating dinner and was about to refuse. But thinking that there was a good chance they’d end up as roommates, and wanting to build a good relationship, she agreed.
The two had just left the apartment complex.
Lynn Walker’s phone rang. She answered, her voice suddenly several pitches sweeter: “Hello, darling. What’s up?”
Evan Carter quietly walked beside her.
“I’m out with my colleague right now, we’re about to grab something to eat.” Lynn Walker started to act cute, “Sure. Where are you? I just left the apartment gate, I’m so tired from walking… Eh, you’re driving over now? Almost here? Okay, I won’t distract you while you’re driving. I’ll wait obediently at the entrance for you, come pick me up quickly, okay?”
After she hung up, Evan Carter sensibly said, “Then I’ll head back first, see you tomorr—”
“Why are you suddenly leaving? Didn’t we agree to eat together?” Lynn Walker frowned, then suddenly realized, “Oh, don’t feel awkward, you’re not a third wheel. My boyfriend’s bringing friends too, just treat it like a little get-together.”
Evan Carter didn’t get a chance to refuse again.
A black car had already pulled up in front of them.
The passenger window rolled down. The man in the driver’s seat turned his head and smiled, “Darling, hop in.” The next moment, he glanced at Evan Carter standing next to Lynn Walker and froze, “Huh, Evan Carter?”
Evan Carter looked over and was stunned as well.
She really hadn’t expected this.
Lynn Walker’s rich second-generation boyfriend turned out to be Ethan Brooks.
“Damn, how many years has it been since we last met…” Before he could finish, a car horn blared from behind. “Shit. Quick, quick, get in, you two, we can’t park here.”
Evan Carter: “No…”
Ethan Brooks urged, “Hurry up!”
“……”
She had no choice but to get in the back seat.
Once inside, Evan Carter realized there was someone else in the back.
She looked closely.
The lighting inside the car was dimmer than outside.
The man made no sound, his breathing shallow, but his presence was strong. At the moment, he was slouched bonelessly in the seat, eyes closed, looking lazy and tired.
As if completely unaware of what was happening around him.
The car started.
Ethan Brooks looked back through the rearview mirror, driving while stirring up trouble: “Hey! Ryan Grant, wake up! Get up and meet your white moonlight!”
Evan Carter: “……”
Chapter 8
As if disturbed by the commotion, Ryan Grant turned his head slightly and lazily opened his eyes.
His gaze met hers.
It felt like an awkwardness was hanging in the air.
Ryan Grant didn’t say a word, quietly looking at her, his eyes clear, not the least bit unfocused from just waking up.
His features were exceptionally attractive. Slightly hooded eyes, the corners of his eyes tilting upward, and with his usual look of indifference toward everything, there was always a sharpness to his gaze.
In that instant,
Evan Carter had the feeling that he was about to start mercilessly mocking the words “white moonlight.”
Lynn Walker spoke up: “You two know each other?”
Ethan Brooks: “Yeah, high school classmates.”
Evan Carter looked away, just about to say something to steer the topic away, when Lynn Walker cluelessly added, “What does ‘white moonlight’ mean? Is it like your friend used to chase after Xiaofan but never got her?”
Ethan Brooks even laughed foolishly, “Yeah, yeah, that’s right.”
“……”
No wonder these two are a couple.
In this situation, no matter how much Evan Carter wanted to play dumb and muddle through, it was impossible.
She was acutely aware that the unspoken masks they’d all worn had, in this moment, been mostly torn away by the two in front, leaving only a bit of cover.
She didn’t expect Ryan Grant to say anything to smooth things over.
Knowing his pride was sky-high, Evan Carter calmly said, “Really? How come I, the person involved, don’t know about this? Ethan Brooks, are you remembering wrong?”
“How could I remember wrong? You two—” At this point, Ethan Brooks finally sensed something was off, “Hey, are you two awkward or what? Seriously? After all these years, you’re still hung up on it? I just brought it up as a funny story, that’s all.”
Lynn Walker: “How long has it been since you last saw each other?”
“I can’t even calculate off the top of my head. Evan Carter, you only stayed at our school for a year, right?” Ethan Brooks said, “I remember you transferred out in either the first or second year of high school.”
Evan Carter replied seriously, “I left in the second semester of sophomore year.”
“So that makes it seven or eight years, huh.” Noticing the still-silent Ryan Grant, Ethan Brooks added, “Ryan Grant, why aren’t you saying anything? It’s been seven or eight years! Don’t tell me you’re still hung up on this?”
Ryan Grant lowered his eyes again, ignoring him.
“Impressive.” Ethan Brooks gave up, complaining, “Evan Carter, just ignore him. You know what he’s like, always looking down on everyone. He probably thinks you were blind back then for not liking him, but he doesn’t realize how annoying he actually is—”
