Eric Bennett ate breakfast, borrowed a few thick pieces of clothing from them, and asked about things in the village.
"Our village doesn't really have anything going on." The villager didn't seem to have any useful information. "Just a few tourists come every winter."
Eric Bennett: "Oh... so how do you get your daily necessities?"
The villager said, "We go outside the mountain to buy them. The mountain roads are hard to walk, but we have to find a way. But as soon as it snows, we can't get out at all. The mountain roads are completely blocked, and we have to stay here all winter."
Eric Bennett thought for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Are all the wells in your village dug in the center of the courtyards?"
He wasn't sure if it was his imagination, but when he mentioned the word "well," the villager's expression seemed to become much more tense. Still, the villager didn't give any special information, just nodded, said yes, and turned to leave.
Eric Bennett thought for a while but couldn't figure anything out, so he decided to give the clothes to Grace Cooper first and talk about the rest later.
When he entered the room, Grace Cooper was lying on the bed playing with her phone. When she saw him come in, she hummed softly, "You're so slow."
Eric Bennett handed the borrowed clothes onto the bed. "Get up, there's breakfast on the first floor."
Grace Cooper responded with a sound.
Eric Bennett said, "I'll wait for you outside."
"Wait." Grace Cooper suddenly called out, "What's on top of your head?"
"What?" Eric Bennett was confused.
Grace Cooper beckoned him over, so Eric Bennett moved closer to her.
"It's all red..." Grace Cooper reached out and touched the top of Eric Bennett's head, then turned her palm over. "What's this?"
As soon as Eric Bennett saw what was in Grace Cooper's hand, he had a bad feeling, because what she was holding looked a lot like frozen blood.
"I'll go check." Eric Bennett hurried into the bathroom, and sure enough, just as Grace Cooper said, he noticed that his hair was full of tiny ice shards. These shards were dark red, hidden in his hair and impossible to notice at first. He had no idea when they got on his head.
"Damn." Eric Bennett cursed under his breath and wiped his head with a towel. It would have been better not to wipe— the more he wiped, the more shocking it looked. The hot towel was almost completely stained red, and his hair still wasn't clean.
Grace Cooper, now dressed in thick clothes, walked over and said bluntly, "At least this stuff isn't green."
Eric Bennett: "...Have you ever seen green blood?"
Grace Cooper said, "So this is blood?"
Eric Bennett sighed and briefly explained what happened on the third floor. When he mentioned there was a dead body, Grace Cooper started crying softly again, saying, "Mr. Bennett, I'm so scared. What if we're the next ones to die?"
She really was a beautiful girl, crying so pitifully that it made people feel sorry for her.
Eric Bennett went over to comfort her, and just as Grace Cooper was about to rest her head on his shoulder, she suddenly asked, "Mr. Bennett, how tall are you?"
Eric Bennett: "...One meter eighty."
"Oh," Grace Cooper said, "Still shorter than me."
Eric Bennett: "..." Sorry to inconvenience you.
Eric Bennett turned away, cleaning his hair while thinking about where the blood could have come from. In the end, he had a chilling thought... Could it have dripped down from the third floor ceiling?
"I want to go check the third floor," Eric Bennett said. "You go eat breakfast on the first floor first."
"Going alone?" Grace Cooper said. "Let's go together."
"You're not scared?" Eric Bennett asked suspiciously. She had just been crying her eyes out.
"Isn't it because you're here?" Grace Cooper tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled gently. "With you here, what is there to be afraid of?"
Eric Bennett thought, that's true— after all, judging by last night, you run faster than I do.
So the two of them went up to the third floor along the corridor.
Still blood everywhere, still those uncollected corpses. But this time, Eric Bennett's attention was on the ceiling. He looked up, and sure enough, he saw traces of blood on the ceiling. The sight was extremely unsettling— it looked as if something had stuck to the ceiling and slowly crawled across. Maybe because it had been a while, the bloodstains on the ceiling had also frozen, but you could still faintly see the blood that had dripped onto the floor.
Eric Bennett's scalp tingled. He really didn't want to think about what was hanging from the ceiling the first time he came to the third floor... and from start to finish, they still hadn't discovered it.
Grace Cooper looked up at the ceiling for a long time.
Eric Bennett asked her what she saw.
"I saw the ceiling," Grace Cooper said. "What else could I see, the starry sky and my dreams?"
Eric Bennett: "..."
She really was brave. After looking at the ceiling, she even went to check out the two mangled corpses, showing no discomfort at all— in fact, she even seemed a little excited.
It wasn't until Eric Bennett gave her a suspicious look and asked, "Aren't you scared?" that she seemed to remember, and started whimpering in a very cooperative way.
Eric Bennett: "...Stop whimpering. Are you going to eat breakfast or not?"
"Eat, eat, eat," Grace Cooper said. "I'm hungry too."
