Chapter 4

Eric Bennett took another look and saw that the woman had already stood up from the bedside. Her head was tilted to one side, her neck growing longer and longer, almost like a mutated snake.

Both of them were stunned by the sight. Finally, Eric Bennett couldn’t take it anymore and shouted, “Shit, run!” He grabbed Grace Cooper’s hand and dashed madly toward the door.

Surprisingly, the usually delicate and frail Grace Cooper ran even faster than Eric Bennett, disappearing out the door like a gust of wind.

Eric Bennett: “Slow the hell down—”

Grace Cooper: “If I slow down, I’m dead—”

Eric Bennett: “……” Hah, women.

The two of them bolted down to the first floor like rabbits, only relaxing once they were sure that thing hadn’t followed them. Grace Cooper cried harder than anyone, ran faster than a dog, and by the time Eric Bennett was panting for breath, she already had tears in her eyes, ready for another round.

“Don’t cry, don’t cry,” said Eric Bennett. “Keep your voice down—what if you attract that thing?”

Grace Cooper: “All you care about is that thing, you don’t care about me at all.”

Eric Bennett: “……”

Maybe Eric Bennett’s expression was too full of disdain, because Grace Cooper managed to hold back her tears, sitting weakly on a bench on the first floor, gently wiping the corners of her moist eyes.

At this moment, they were standing in the living room on the first floor. The whole house was empty and silent. Despite all the commotion just now, not a single person came out to see what was happening. Other than their own heavy breathing, there was no other sound at all.

Eric Bennett stood there for a while, hesitating. “What should we do?” He and Grace Cooper had no experience with this kind of thing at all, and had no idea what to do. Now they just stood in the living room like two wooden posts.

“It’s snowing outside,” Grace Cooper suddenly said, slowly walking to the door and looking out into the courtyard.

“It started snowing at midnight,” Eric Bennett said, standing at the doorway. He saw that a thin layer of snow had already accumulated in the courtyard, and he also saw the well that the female ghost had mentioned earlier. Just as she said, there was indeed a well in the center of the courtyard. Its position was rather odd, right in the very center, even blocking the main entrance. From a feng shui perspective, this was not a good sign.

“Stone at the entrance, words hard to speak,” Grace Cooper suddenly said. “This well is cleverly built.” She smiled, the curve of her eyes making her look especially beautiful.

“What?” asked Eric Bennett. “You know feng shui?”

Grace Cooper replied, “My family does this kind of work, so I’ve learned a bit.” She glanced sideways at Eric Bennett. “What do you do?”

Eric Bennett: “I’m a designer…”

Grace Cooper: “Oh, your hair’s not thinning, so you haven’t been doing it for long, huh?”

Eric Bennett: “……” You really know how to talk.

“Guess what I do?” Grace Cooper twirled a strand of her hair.

Eric Bennett: “Model?” He rarely saw girls as tall as Grace Cooper, with such a straight posture and good temperament. Other than her small chest, she seemed to have no other flaws.

“Nope,” Grace Cooper said with a smile. “I’m a fortune teller.”

Eric Bennett was stunned.

“Let me do a reading,” Grace Cooper quickly calculated with her fingers. “With the moon so full tonight, I think someone’s going to die.”

Eric Bennett couldn’t help but laugh: “What kind of logic is that? How does a full moon mean someone’s going to die?”

Grace Cooper ignored Eric Bennett and walked toward the courtyard, waving at him to follow. Eric Bennett was startled by her action: “What are you doing? It’s so late…”

Grace Cooper said, “I want to take a look at the well.”

“Let’s check it out tomorrow during the day. It’s dangerous now.” Even as Eric Bennett said this, he was still worried something might happen to Grace Cooper, so he followed her into the courtyard.

Grace Cooper was wearing a long white dress, moving lightly across the snow like an elf. She slowly approached the well, but didn’t get too close, instead waiting for Eric Bennett to catch up.

Eric Bennett asked, “What’s wrong?”

Grace Cooper replied, “Nothing, I suddenly don’t feel like looking anymore. Let’s go back.”

Eric Bennett was baffled: “Why do you want to go back all of a sudden?”

“It’s too cold,” said Grace Cooper. “I’m freezing.” As she spoke, she naturally took Eric Bennett’s arm and forcefully dragged him back into the house.

Eric Bennett, being pulled by Grace Cooper, realized she was surprisingly strong and couldn’t break free for a moment.

“Grace Cooper?” Eric Bennett was startled by her strength.

Only then did Grace Cooper let go: “Let’s go, it’s so cold, hurry back, we can still get a bit more sleep…” With that, she ignored Eric Bennett and went upstairs to her room.

Eric Bennett had no choice but to follow her back to the room on the second floor. Fortunately, the terrifying woman from before was gone, but the window was open, and the cold wind was howling into the room.

Grace Cooper got into bed, closed her eyes, and was ready to sleep.
