“It was raining and I was speeding—almost lost my life.” Ryan Sullivan sighed, “She’s called my girlfriend, but in my condition, I’d just be dragging her down, wouldn’t I?”
Logan Bennett immediately agreed, “That’s true. So what are you two going to do, just keep dragging it out?”
“We’ll probably break up in a while,” Ryan Sullivan said with a smile. “I can’t really help much by staying here anyway. I’ll just go back to the county and live my life.”
The KTV had suspended business due to the crime scene; the main door was half-closed and deserted. The two of them chatted as they entered, and immediately saw Emily Carter at the bar, craning her neck in anticipation: “Brother Sullivan!”
Ryan Sullivan: “Oh, I…”
Emily Carter’s eyes were practically sparkling with joy: “Oh, you scared me to death, Brother Sullivan, where did you go? Why didn’t you say anything? There are so many cars outside, how could you just wander off alone?”
Ryan Sullivan: “……”
“I waited for you forever, and you wouldn’t answer your phone! Where’s Little Miller? Why didn’t Little Miller go with you? What if something happened? Come on, sit down—have you eaten this late? What did you eat? Hey, get the floor manager over here, tell the kitchen to bring out the steamed egg custard I just ordered!”
Ryan Sullivan: “…………”
Logan Bennett raised his eyebrows, smiling silently.
Emily Carter was practically circling around him nonstop, so Ryan Sullivan had no choice but to deal with her quickly, telling her about running into Logan Bennett on the road. Emily Carter immediately became extremely grateful to Officer Bennett, pushing Ryan Sullivan to go upstairs and eat while insisting on personally treating Logan Bennett to a meal.
“No need, I just came to check the scene. I have to rush back to the city bureau soon,” Logan Bennett said with a smile. “You guys go ahead, just have a staff member take me to the back kitchen.”
Emily Carter immediately put down her bag and shoes: “I’m not busy at all! Come, let me take you. After the police cordoned off the place yesterday, I had the kitchen sealed off. Didn’t you say we had to cooperate with the police? I even told the staff three times not to talk nonsense outside, just in case they leaked any police secrets.”
Logan Bennett put on shoe covers and gloves: “No need, you don’t know any secrets anyway.”
Emily Carter stood at the kitchen door, smiling apologetically.
Her heavy makeup made it hard to tell her age, but her features and clothes were all beautiful, and she’d even sprayed a bit of perfume into her carefully styled curls—Logan Bennett had never seen a woman dress up so meticulously just to be downstairs at her own home. The only explanation was that she knew Ryan Sullivan would come back.
Logan Bennett found it quite amusing.
This woman was quick-witted, a smooth talker, and handled things with the savvy of someone who’d spent years mingling in all walks of life. And her supposedly small-town fiancé not only could only do manual labor and was physically frail, but had also been bedridden for years, with almost no ability to work.
No matter how you looked at it, the two of them didn’t seem like a good match, but when Emily Carter faced him, she naturally looked up to him.
Logan Bennett’s gaze landed on the freezer, and for a moment he recalled the scene earlier when he’d offered Ryan Sullivan a cigarette—the latter took it, lowered his head slightly, the curve of his neck forming an elegant arc as he lit the cigarette with Logan Bennett’s lighter and exhaled gently.
It seemed like a gesture of someone very used to being offered cigarettes.
Logan Bennett opened the freezer door and asked casually, “You and your boyfriend get along well?”
Emily Carter smiled in tacit agreement.
“How did you meet?”
“We both left the county to work in the city years ago. After a few years in Gongzhou, he went back home. Later, I opened this place in Jianning, and as business grew, I wanted him to come help. But then he got into a car accident on the way.” Emily Carter sighed with emotion, “Honestly, the way he is now is my responsibility!”
Logan Bennett shook his head sympathetically, closed the freezer, and walked through the kitchen toward the back door.
“You’re…?”
“Oh, I’m just going to take a look at the street, no need to follow me.” Logan Bennett waved his hand without looking back. “Go on, do your thing.”
The dirty, narrow back alley was deserted. With the KTV closed today, it felt even more desolate. Yesterday, the tech team had scoured the place, even turning over the trash bins, so there was basically nothing left to re-examine.
Logan Bennett dialed a number on his phone as he walked along the path seen in the surveillance footage, heading out: “Hello, Mason Reed, are you guys back at the team? Log into the internal network and check someone for me.”
The other end was noisy, probably the tech team working overtime. Mason Reed shouted, “Sure—who do you want me to check?”
“Henry Turner,” Logan Bennett said. “The one in the wheelchair at the scene last night. Check his place of origin, school, work history, and if there are any hotel records, check those too.”
“What, is he a suspect?”
“Can’t say yet, just check first.”
Mason Reed’s best trait was his efficiency. Logan Bennett left the alley, pacing the empty path, searching along the curb. In no time, he heard on the phone, “Got it—Henry Turner, place of origin matches last night’s statement, associate degree, spent a few years in Gongzhou, worked at a nightclub with that Emily Carter.”
Logan Bennett paused, clearly surprised. “Are you sure it’s the same person?”
“Positive, it’s on the household registration system.”
“…And then what happened?” Logan Bennett pressed.
