The hoodie guy looked even more terrified, stammering, “Did… did you do this?”
“Self-defense.” Blake White didn’t look at the corpse on the ground and spoke concisely, “Can you be my witness? Prove that they really intended to rob with knives. There doesn’t seem to be any surveillance around here, you’re the only witness.”
The hoodie guy hesitated for less than a second before nodding, “Okay, if you need me.”
Blake White let out a sigh of relief, picked up the black umbrella from the ground, shook off the rainwater, and walked toward the hoodie guy.
The hoodie guy backed away in fear.
Blake White: “……”
“You don’t have an umbrella, and the security officers might take a while to get here. We can share one.” Blake White said, “My name is Blake White, I’m a student at Black Sea Academy.”
“Logan Hill.” The hoodie guy relaxed a bit upon hearing that Blake White was a student. “I’m also from Black Sea Academy. What’s your major?”
Blake White said, “Criminal investigation.”
“Criminal investigation? No wonder you’re so skilled.” Logan Hill muttered.
“Thank you for tonight.” Blake White walked over and tilted the umbrella a bit more toward him.
Logan Hill gave an awkward laugh, “No problem, just doing a good deed like Lei Feng… though it seems you didn’t really need my help. My parents’ convenience store is just up ahead. I heard the robbery and got scared, so I ran back to grab a baseball bat and rushed over. We’ll probably have to give statements later, so I’ll go let my parents know I’m safe first. Wait here for me.”
Blake White nodded slowly, watching as Logan Hill dashed into the rain and disappeared around the corner.
She pondered for a moment, then activated her wristband and searched online for the keyword “Lei Feng.”
Search results—“0.”
There were no stories of Lei Feng doing good deeds in the Second World, nor any mention of the “spirit of Lei Feng.”
“As expected, I was right.” Blake White thought to herself.
The hoodie guy, Logan Hill, was a player from the First World.
He had probably just arrived in this world and wasn’t very familiar with it yet, which explained why he was so clumsy when calling the police. Like Blake White, he didn’t really understand the high-tech portable devices of this cyberpunk world. He hadn’t paid close attention to his location, nor had he recorded any information—or maybe he had, but was too panicked to recall it—so when he called the police, he didn’t know this was Anning Street in the Harbor District.
Logan Hill hadn’t been in this world long enough to learn its history, which was why he said something like “doing good deeds like Lei Feng,” a phrase everyone in the First World understood, but no one in the Second World should know who Lei Feng was.
Meeting a fellow countryman in another world—what a classic scenario.
But, among the six pieces of advice given to players, one said: “Do not reveal your identity as a player to anyone.”
Anyone!
Blake White thought it over and decided to comply.
She wouldn’t reveal her identity to people of the Second World, nor to other players. She would treat this as a role-playing game, play her part, and be a qualified “player.”
Blake White waited under the umbrella for ten minutes before Logan Hill came running back through the rain.
This actually surprised Blake White; she thought Logan Hill was just making an excuse to run away. After all, getting caught up in a major case involving a death right after crossing into another world was a very unwise choice for him.
“Oh my god, this rain is really coming down. Who knows when it’ll stop.” Logan Hill now had an extra umbrella in his hand, which he’d gotten from the convenience store. “I told my dad, now we just wait for the authorities.”
After five minutes, a hovering police car stopped above Blake White and Logan Hill. The car’s loudspeaker said, “Please put down your weapons and place your hands on your head.”
Blake White and Logan Hill complied, and then the police car landed on the street. Two security officers got out, weapons in hand, and the laser aiming dots from their guns appeared on Blake White.
“I am Blake White, intern security officer of the Seventh Field Team, Investigation Department.” Blake White said quickly, “I was robbed on my way home and fought back in self-defense.”
One of the female security officers fixed her gaze on Blake White and said, “Adam, scan.”
“Scan complete, facial recognition matched.” Adam’s mechanical voice sounded. “Statement confirmed. Hello, intern security officer Blake White.”
It continued, “Logan Hill, Level 4 citizen, student of the Mechanical Department at Black Sea Academy, no criminal record, target assessed as non-threatening.”
“Ryan Lewis, Level 5 citizen, unemployed vagrant, criminal record includes robbery and theft, target deceased, no resuscitation value.”
“Henry Scott, Level 5 citizen, unemployed vagrant, criminal record includes theft and vandalism, target deceased, no resuscitation value.”
The two security officers who got out of the police car put away their weapons and nodded at Blake White, “According to procedure, we need to take your statements. Please come with us for the investigation.”
“No problem.” Blake White glanced at the still-dazed Logan Hill. “He’s a witness.”
“Alright, don’t worry.” The female security officer patted Blake White on the shoulder. “Once the statements are done, you’ll be fine. It’s just procedure.”
