Chapter 16

Nancy Clark wanted to curse. Why were the cleaners only equipped with air guns? If they had a submachine gun, the fight would have been over by now.

The power of air pellets was limited; they couldn’t shoot far, reloading took time, and there was a clear interval between shots—all of which created huge obstacles to killing the contaminants.

Suddenly, the lights inside the train began to flicker violently.

Nancy Clark frowned. The night vision function of her helmet couldn’t adjust in time. Holding her gun in one hand, Nancy Clark advanced slowly. The passengers inside the train all stared at Nancy Clark with a sinister gaze, letting out low growls, like beasts howling before a meal.

The contaminated zone was about to collapse.

Nancy Clark was still searching when her pupils suddenly contracted.

Bang! A hand with sharp fish fins punched straight through the train window, grabbed Nancy Clark by the neck, and yanked her out of the carriage in one swift motion, right under Nathan Thompson’s astonished gaze.

Nathan Thompson fired at the fish hand that had suddenly appeared from the darkness, but it was already too late.

The train sped forward. Nathan Thompson was still on board, and within three seconds, the train had carried him far away. Nathan Thompson and Nancy Clark lost contact.

The moment she was pulled out by the fish hand, Nancy Clark reacted with lightning speed. She pressed the inflation button on her work uniform, and the combat suit filled with air, transforming from a biker jacket into a “spacesuit.”

The inflated uniform gave her extra cushioning. When the fishman dragged her off the tracks, it protected her fragile human body.

Nancy Clark was held by the fishman, rolling over a dozen times. When she finally regained her senses, the fishman was strangling her neck, straddling her.

She had lost her gun during the tumble. This was the railway track; Nancy Clark’s back was lying on the gravel, and a crazed fishman was on top of her.

The fishman’s eyes were as big as fists, now bloodshot, with a swirling vortex at the center. The vortex spun at an eerily high speed, making anyone dizzy with just a glance.

“Did you see my last train?” The fishman was clutching Nancy Clark’s neck, trying to remove the obstructive helmet.

Nancy Clark kicked desperately at his abdomen. If her helmet was pulled off, she would be parasitized for sure.

“I missed my train,” the fishman said as he tore at Nancy Clark’s helmet.

“My daughter is waiting for me at home. I haven’t spoken to her in days.”

“I can’t find the last train.” He kept repeating this sentence.

Nancy Clark’s mind began to spin. So that’s it.

The fishman missed the last train, so he wasn’t on board. He could only cling desperately to the outside. He never got on, not even in death.

【Sanity decreased by 10%】

【Health decreased by 20%】

【Please escape as soon as possible】

The system kept prompting in her ear, but Nancy Clark’s panel was completely empty. She had no items to escape with.

【Side quest: The Disappeared Last Train of Line 1. Current purification progress: 70%.】

The good news: her purification progress bar had moved. The bad news: she was about to be strangled to death by the fishman. What a damn system.

Nancy Clark kept attacking the fishman’s abdomen.

Rumble—

Suddenly, she heard a roaring sound. The ground train, the ground train was coming again.

Two headlights illuminated the tracks. This ground train kept looping, and now Nancy Clark was pinned on the rails. If the train came, she’d be crushed to a pulp.

Damn! This fish, he was truly vicious.

Nathan Thompson was still on the train, looking for a chance to get off, but the train no longer stopped at any stations.

Nathan Thompson was anxious. He rushed into the driver’s cab and shot the driver in the head. Then he locked himself inside. Outside the transparent glass door, crazed fishmen clawed madly, trying to get in.

Nathan Thompson saw Nancy Clark on the tracks ahead.

Nancy Clark was pinned by a fishman. Nathan Thompson tried to find the brake button, but no matter how he pressed, the train didn’t respond at all.

The driver was just for show; the ground train had its own operating rules.

“Nancy Clark!” Nathan Thompson shouted, “Get out of the way!”

Of course, Nancy Clark couldn’t hear him. Nathan Thompson started frantically pressing the train’s horn. Luckily, that button still worked.

“Nancy Clark!” Amid the blaring horn, Nathan Thompson shouted, “Move!”

Nathan Thompson, just a janitor, couldn’t bear to watch his colleague get crushed to pieces by the train. The headlights were blindingly bright, and Nancy Clark’s already unstable mind became even more disoriented.

The blaring horn was piercing, as if it would shatter her eardrums.

Nancy Clark had no weapons, no items. All she could do was stubbornly, again and again, attack the fishman’s abdomen, striking the same spot each time.

She could feel the fishman’s belly scales splitting, blood already oozing out. Nancy Clark gritted her teeth—she needed the fishman to loosen his grip for just one second.

Just one second, just give her… one second.

“Hiss…” Nancy Clark heard the fishman suck in a cold breath. She had broken one of his ribs.

Now! Nancy Clark suddenly pushed off with both legs, slammed her elbow into the fishman’s face, and in an instant, flipped him over, pinning him beneath her.

Rumble, rumble—

The ground train was almost upon them. Nancy Clark had no time to tangle with the fishman. She braced herself on the edge of the platform and leapt up onto it.
