Chapter 5

“Don’t be angry.” Samuel Grant freed one hand and ruffled Susan Clark’s hair again. “Capitalists are all heartless. Don’t stoop to their level.”

“Hey.” Susan Clark covered her hair, a little unhappy. “Why do you keep messing with my hair today? It’s so annoying.”

——

When she got home, Susan Clark didn’t even have the energy to shower, nor did she rush to remove her makeup. She kicked off her high heels and collapsed onto the sofa, her eyes unable to stay open any longer as consciousness quickly slipped away.

But just as she was about to fall asleep, she suddenly remembered she hadn’t checked if Samuel Grant had made it home safely, so she immediately sprang up from bed.

She didn’t find her phone in her coat pocket, so Susan Clark searched her shoulder bag, but still couldn’t find it. In the end, she simply dumped everything out of her bag, but still didn’t see her phone.

Sitting on the sofa, Susan Clark recalled the events of the night. Based on her movements, it was impossible that her phone had been stolen.

So, it was either left at Warner Manor or in Samuel Grant’s car.

The phone was too important to Susan Clark’s life; she couldn’t rest until she found it. So she immediately pulled out her iPad to locate her phone.

A few minutes later, she saw the red dot on the map growing clearer, but her mind was only getting more confused.

Her phone, at this moment, was actually showing up at Jiangcheng First People’s Hospital.

Was it really stolen?

Impossible—she clearly remembered getting into Samuel Grant’s car with her phone in hand, and she hadn’t gone anywhere else.

The only explanation now was that she left her phone in Samuel Grant’s car, and Samuel Grant had gone to the hospital.

But why would Samuel Grant go to the hospital at this hour?

Did he suddenly fall ill? Or was there a car accident?

Susan Clark didn’t dare think further. She immediately got up, changed into a pair of pants, and headed out.

Outside, the wind and rain were still raging. Cars sped by on the road. Without her phone, Susan Clark couldn’t hail a ride online and had to stand in the cold wind for over twenty minutes before finally catching a car.

Even late at night, the city hospital was brightly lit, the smell of disinfectant mixed with the cold wind and rain filling the air.

Susan Clark opened the car door, and rain splashed onto her face.

She held up her umbrella, wiped her face casually, and looked around. She immediately spotted Samuel Grant’s car.

But Samuel Grant wasn’t in the car, and Susan Clark had no idea how she was supposed to find Samuel Grant in such a big hospital without her phone.

The rain was now so heavy that the umbrella couldn’t keep it out. The discomfort in Susan Clark’s lower abdomen grew worse, cold sweat breaking out on her back, her steps unsteady as she walked toward the outpatient building, her pant legs gradually soaking through, making it harder and harder to move.

Suddenly, she stepped into a puddle, stumbled, and fell to the side.

Luckily, there was a car parked nearby. Though it hurt a bit to fall against it, at least she didn’t end up on the waterlogged ground.

Susan Clark slowly stood up. Looking down at the car’s logo, she quickly sprang away.

It was a Rolls-Royce with a repeating-number license plate—definitely not something she could afford to mess with. Anyone who didn’t know better might think she was trying to scam them.

Rubbing her wrist, Susan Clark continued forward, holding her shaky umbrella.

But when she was less than ten meters from the outpatient building, her steps suddenly froze.

Even with the heavy rain, she could clearly make out the man slowly walking out—it was her boyfriend.

And at this moment, her boyfriend had his arm around another woman.

That woman was even wearing Samuel Grant’s coat.

That coat was one Susan Clark had bought.

Thoughts in her mind sprouted and grew wildly, only a thin membrane separating her from the truth, but Susan Clark was still trying to comfort herself.

They must just be friends. Samuel Grant was always friendly, and coming to the hospital at night to see a friend was normal. Besides, they weren’t being particularly intimate.

But the next second, that woman hugged Samuel Grant.

Samuel Grant raised his hand and ruffled her hair, a helpless smile on his lips.

In an instant, Susan Clark felt as if the icy rain was stabbing into her flesh, chilling her to the bone.

After a while, the woman looked up, her tear-streaked face gazing at Samuel Grant. The two were so close their breaths could mingle.

From where Susan Clark stood, she could only see the woman’s lips moving intermittently, while Samuel Grant’s expression seemed to grow more and more unnatural.

Then, the woman rose on tiptoe and kissed him.

Susan Clark squeezed her eyes shut as if she’d seen something filthy, and didn’t open them for a long time.

——Samuel Grant, when I open my eyes, you’ll push her away!

——If you push her away, I’ll listen to your explanation!

She didn’t know how many seconds passed. Susan Clark furrowed her brow tightly, slowly opened her eyes, and the scene before her gradually came into focus.

Samuel Grant not only hadn’t pushed the woman away, he was even responding to her kiss.

His slender hand slowly rose and wrapped around her waist.

The rain fell harder and harder, as if it wanted to drown the city.

The night sky was like a movie screen with the lights turned off, and scenes from the past flashed before Susan Clark’s eyes.

At first, she hadn’t even liked Samuel Grant.
