Chapter 17

There are indeed a few divine officials in the Heavenly Realm who, due to special needs, are well-versed in the art of transformation. But I’m afraid it’s too late to learn it now. At that moment, George came in with a dark face. After venting his anger, he calmed down considerably—truly just like the general he serves. William Carter saw that it was already late and said, “Forget it, it’s all the same with the veil on.” As he spoke, he was about to cover himself, but Emma raised a hand to stop him and said, “Wait. You don’t know how that ghost groom harms people. If he lifts the veil and finds out he’s been tricked, and flies into a rage, something unexpected might happen. Wouldn’t that cause even more trouble?”

William Carter thought this made sense, but as soon as he took a step, he heard a ripping sound.

The red wedding dress Emma had found for him really didn’t fit very well.

Women are generally much more petite, so while the waist wasn’t too bad on him, raising his arms or taking a step was very restrictive. With any big movement, the dress tore. Just as he was trying to find where it had ripped, a voice came from the temple entrance: “Excuse me…”

The three of them looked toward the sound and saw Little Emma standing at the temple door, holding a neatly folded white robe in her hands, looking at them timidly.

She said, “I remember seeing you here last night, so I thought I’d come by to see if I’d run into you again… I washed the clothes, and I’ll leave them here. Thank you for everything yesterday and today.”

William Carter was about to smile at her, but suddenly remembered what he looked like right now and decided it was better not to say much and scare her.

Unexpectedly, Little Emma wasn’t frightened at all. Instead, she took a step forward and said, “Are you… If you like, I can help you?”

“…” William Carter said, “No, miss, don’t misunderstand. I don’t have that kind of hobby.”

Little Emma quickly said, “I know, I know. I mean, if you don’t mind, I can help you. You… you’re going to catch the ghost groom, right?”

Her voice and expression suddenly brightened as she said, “I—I can alter clothes, I always carry a needle and thread with me. If anything doesn’t fit, I can fix it. I can also do hair and makeup. Let me help you!”

“……”

Two incense sticks’ time later, William Carter once again came out from behind the hall with his head lowered.

This time, the bridal veil was properly in place. George and Emma seemed to want to take a look, but in the end decided to spare their own eyes. The bridal sedan chair they had found was waiting at the temple entrance, and the carefully selected sedan bearers had been waiting for quite some time. Under the dark moon and high winds, His Highness the Crown Prince, dressed in a brand-new wedding gown, boarded the bright red bridal sedan.

Author’s note: The “C天R地” in the blurb is “艹天日地.” The blurb needs to be harmonious, so I can’t write it out.

The first look when the bride lifts her veil must be for her husband only!!!!

When the gong appears, I’ll write it in the chapter summary, so please don’t be impatient.

Chapter 7: The Ghostly Wedding—Crown Prince Boards the Bridal Sedan

The bridal sedan was entirely draped in bright red silk, embroidered with colorful threads depicting conjugal bliss and dragons and phoenixes in harmony. George and Emma walked on either side, escorting the sedan. William Carter sat upright inside, swaying gently as the sedan bearers walked.

The eight sedan bearers were all martial officers of exceptional skill. To find such strong bearers, George and Emma had gone straight to the official’s residence, demonstrated their abilities, and stated they were going to investigate Yujun Mountain at night. The official, without a word, lined up a group of tall, burly martial officers. However, the reason for seeking such skilled men wasn’t because they expected help, but simply so that, should fierce ghosts attack, the bearers would at least be able to save themselves and escape.

In fact, these eight martial officers actually looked down on them a bit. In the residence, they were top-notch fighters—wherever they went, they were leaders among men. Now, these two pretty boys were riding above them and making them serve as sedan bearers, which was quite displeasing. They couldn’t disobey their master’s orders, so they suppressed their disdain, but still felt resentful and occasionally let it show—stumbling a bit or jolting the sedan on purpose. Outsiders wouldn’t notice, but anyone sitting inside, if even a little delicate, would probably be sick to their stomach.

Sure enough, after a while, they heard William Carter inside the sedan let out a soft sigh, and several of the martial officers couldn’t help but feel secretly pleased.

Outside, Emma said coolly, “Miss, what’s wrong? Are you so moved to tears at getting married at such an old age?”

Indeed, many brides do cry in the bridal sedan when leaving home. William Carter was both amused and exasperated, but when he spoke, his voice was calm and steady, showing not the slightest sign of discomfort from all the jostling. He said, “No. I just suddenly realized that something very important is missing from this wedding procession.”

George asked, “What’s missing? We should have prepared everything.”

William Carter smiled and said, “Two maidservants to accompany the bride.”

“……”

The two outside glanced at each other, and whatever image came to mind made them both shudder. Emma said, “Just pretend your family is poor and can’t afford maids. Make do.”

William Carter said, “Alright then.”

The sedan bearers overheard their banter and couldn’t help but laugh. Their resentment faded, and they felt a bit more friendly, so the sedan became steadier. William Carter leaned back again, sat upright, and closed his eyes to rest.

But before long, a string of children’s laughter suddenly sounded in his ear.

Cackling, giggling, and shrieking.
